New season signals the start of spring sports

Spring 2010 sports started yesterday. Tennis player Jesse DiTommaso remarks on their first, “We ran the mile. Basically, we just did a lot of conditioning.” There are 31 players in the girls’ side this season. Track participant Bryce Kantorowicz agrees that the day was “mostly conditioning.” Both are looking forward to their seasons and hope for a good turn out.

Sophomores file in for testing galore

The Sophomores all over Skyview filed into classrooms on March 9th to take the MontCast tests. Most of Tuesday and part of Wednesday were spent in solitary confinement slaving over three sections of Reading, Math, and Science. Skyview High School insisted that all tenth graders take them, and if not present those student are being pulled out of class to make up the tests. The test is taken to ensure all students are being educated. It is related to No Child Left Behind. After taking the test you can read, sleep, or other silent activities excluding homework. It happens once a year, so Freshmen get ready! Next year is gonna be a blast!

Student becomes charged for felony

March 10

It has been released that Junior Zach Lindsey is being charged as an adult after his involvement in the large-scale fight on March 2. Apparently, Zach went after the victim with a tire iron, but the weapon was taken from him.  He pulled something out of his pocket and punched the victim repeatedly.  Rumors claim that the weapon was brass knuckles, but Zach claimed that the item was merely a lighter.  Authorities are unsure whether the school neglected to do something to prevent the incident.

Heights brawl raises concerns

March 9

As many students and faculty are already aware, there was a fight amongst Skyview students Tuesday after school. The fight happened at a private residence located on Ahoy Ave. Originally, it was planned for Walsh Park, but was later moved. According to fellow students, the disagreement had been an ongoing issue that mostly involved verbal harassment and altercations between the two boys. One young man was sent to the hospital, reportedly with lacerations on his forearms and unspecified facial injuries to the face. The authorities were called and legal action has been taken among some students. For the record, there is a school policy against fighting and against attending a fight.

Slick road conditions cause for hazardous travel

Rather than students and teachers following 'The Yellow Brick Road,' they are traveling the ice slicked roads. Drivers alike are traveling in dangerour conditions. Senior Presley Myers says we should have a snow day, but Mr. Michaels disagrees. "We need to learn now to live in Montana."

Obama speaks to students

A smattering of whistles and applause echoed down the halls as televisions across the school tuned in to President Obama’s speech.

The 20-minute speech centered around the importance of education and was broadcasted nationally to students K-12. Nearly 40 students here opted out of listening, however, and sat in the library instead.

How did Obama’s speech today affect your perception of school?

“It didn’t affect it at all. I hear that from my parents every day.”

Kylinn Brendan

Senior

“It made me feel that you need to stay in school to succeed and go far.”

Students complete SRI test

Today hundred’s of students half heartedly made their way to computer labs around the school in order to complete their first SRI of the year.

The SRI is stanard reading test which is meant to asses the student’s reading abilities. Freshman, Sophmore, and Junior English classes all spent the majority of their class time to take this test. However, because of the sheer numbers of students taking this test, computers all over the school have locked up, frustrating many students as well as school staff members.

What do you feel is the point of the SRI test?

The kids can find out their Lexile score reading level. It's beneficial so they can see if they need remedial help.

Mrs. Dolan

Do you feel that the SRI test had a point?

Not really. It was just like every other test.

Ryan Schottler

Sophmore

Open House welcomes parents

Middle-aged adults fill the halls, searching for classes that aren't even theirs-- the traditoin of Open House carries on. Counselors first greet parents with specific information about their child’s grade, and after, parents receive their child’s schedule and must uncertainly navigate their way to each class, and for ten minutes discover what the semester hold for their student.

Do you want your parents to come to the Open House?

No, they would be an embarrassment to mother nature and the school
James Matthews, 10

Yeah sure, so they can meet the teachers and stuff.
Gregg Markley, 10

Homecoming parade approaches

At the beginning of every school year, Skyview’s staff and students put on a homecoming parade that brings joy to the Height’s community. The parade, on Friday the 18th, allows all clubs and classes to ride on a float. The hour-long procession attracts preschool through middle school students waiting for a shower of candy.

Q: What sort of preparations goes into homecoming?

A: For the Falcon Feed we preorder $2000 worth of pizza and sell tickets for the lunch. A $1.5 million dollar insurance policy is required in order to put on the parade. Hallway decorating and parade applications are assigned. A permit from city council is required and the police are asked to block off the roadways during the parade.

Q: You are a cheerleader, were you given the option to ride on the activities float or your class float, and if so, which did you choose?

A:I was given the choice and chose to ride on the cheerleading float with my team.
