The Japan Club at Skyview High School was established in the Fall of 2003 in order to study Japanese language and culture.  The sponsor of the club, Mr. Gottula, spent three years living and teaching English in Yanagida, a village of about 5,000 people located on the Noto peninsula of Ishikawa prefecture in western Japan.  As a result of his experiences, Mr. Gottula is able to teach students conversational Japanese, as well as the Hiragana and Katakana alphabets.

In Japan Club, students study basic Japanese as a means to understanding Japanese culture, including manga, movies, and music.  However, the highlight of the program is traveling to Japan at the end of the school year.   The 2004 Japan Club trip included sightseeing in Tokyo, Kawagoe, Nara & Kyoto, and Hiroshima.  In addition, students enjoyed a one-week homestay in Kumamoto, Montana's sister-state.

The opportunity to travel to Japan is an excellent experience for students who have never been to a foreign country.
